How Long Do Lash Extensions Last? Aftercare & Fill Tips

Love your new lashes? Of course you want them to last as long as possible!
Whether you're getting extensions for the first time or you've been wearing them for years, a little TLC can make a big difference. Here's what to know about lash retention, everyday care, and when it's time to book your next appointment.

How Long Do Lash Extensions Actually Last?

Lash extensions are attached to your natural lashes, which means they gradually shed as your own lashes go through their natural growth cycle.

Most people notice changes in fullness over the first few weeks. Many clients schedule fills around every 2–3 weeks, although the timing varies depending on natural lash shedding, aftercare, and personal preference.

There's no magic expiration date! Some people notice gaps sooner, while others maintain a fuller look for longer.

What Makes Lash Extensions Fall Out Faster?

Natural shedding is completely normal, but a few everyday habits can affect how well your extensions stay in place.

  • Rubbing or pulling at your lashes. Be gentle, especially when removing eye makeup.
  • Skipping lash cleansing. Makeup residue, oils, and everyday buildup can collect around your lash line.
  • Using incompatible products. Some skincare and makeup products may affect extension retention.
  • Sleeping with your face pressed into your pillow. Friction can bend or loosen extensions.

And remember, losing a few extensions doesn't automatically mean something went wrong. Your natural lashes shed, too!

How to Take Care of Your Lash Extensions

Good lash care doesn't have to be complicated.

Keep them clean. Use a lash-extension-safe cleanser as recommended by your artist, and gently clean your lashes regularly.

Be gentle. Avoid rubbing, tugging, or picking at your extensions. If something feels uncomfortable, reach out to Olivia rather than trying to remove it yourself.

Brush carefully. A clean lash spoolie can help keep your extensions looking neat. Follow your artist's instructions on when and how to brush them.

Choose your products thoughtfully. Check that your eye makeup, cleansers, and skincare products are compatible with lash extensions.

Follow your aftercare instructions. Olivia can explain any specific precautions for your appointment, including when to get your lashes wet.

When Should You Book a Lash Fill?

A fill helps refresh your lash set by replacing extensions that have shed and addressing gaps as your natural lashes grow.

At Beauty by O’Shade, at least 50% of your lash extensions must still remain to qualify for a fill.

If fewer than 50% remain, please book a new full set instead.

Not sure whether you need a fill or a full set? Reach out to Olivia before booking. It's always easier to choose the right appointment ahead of time.

Can You Make Lash Extensions Last Longer?

You can't stop your natural lashes from shedding, but consistent aftercare can help you get the most out of your extensions.

The biggest things? Keep them clean, avoid unnecessary friction, use compatible products, and don't pick at loose extensions.

And if you ever want a break from extensions, that's okay, too! You might enjoy a lash lift, which enhances the curl of your natural lashes without adding extensions.
